Senior’s Eye Exams

Seniors (65+) are partially covered by Alberta Health Care for yearly eye examinations.

Alberta Health Care provides partial coverage for annual eye exams for seniors (65+). However, as of early 2025, Alberta Health Care (AHC) introduced substantial cuts to the billing codes for optometric services. Due to these changes, many clinic visits that were once fully covered now require a patient co-payment. We will continue to submit claims to AHC for the covered portion of your eye exam, but a co-payment will be necessary to cover the remaining cost.

The incidence of eye disease increases with age but early detection and treatment can prevent permanent damage and vision loss.

The most common age related eye complications include:

  • Dry eye is when the eye is unable to maintain proper moisture which can cause blurry vision, feeling of sand in the eye, red eyes, tearing, etc.
  • Cataracts is a cloudiness or opacity of the lens inside the eye which causes blurry vision, especially in low light
  • Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve resulting in irreversible blindness and typically effects peripheral vision first.
  • Macular degeneration is a disease of the macula which is the area of the retina responsible for our central vision. In general there are two forms of macular degeneration, wet and dry.
